Executive Summary

PLAN is the first not-for-profit organization in Canada to conduct an externally reviewed social audit using the framework developed by the Institute for Social and Ethical Accountability (www.accountability.org.uk).

PLAN undertook the social audit at a time of increasing interest in and demand for its services. The social audit was identified as the best process to ensure the core organizational values will continue to inspire, inform and shape PLAN for years into the future. The social audit was implemented to enhance PLAN's accountability and strengthen its services. The social audit had four goals:

  • Strengthen relationships across the organization
  • Assess how well we are living our core values
  • Determine how effectively we are serving members
  • Explore how growth and change are impacting the organization.

Stakeholders from across the organization were involved in all aspects of the audit.

To conduct the audit, a unique framework that identified key elements that constitute PLAN was developed. Our Social Audit Steering Committee developed performance indicators for each element to measure PLAN's effectiveness and identify areas for improvement and development.

The findings in this Accountability Report identify many areas of strength for PLAN. In particular, it is clear that personal networks are making a significant difference in people's lives and families have a great deal of confidence in PLAN. Support for PLAN's core values is widespread in the organization. The findings demonstrate that PLAN has a contagious vision and many dedicated and passionate people who are committed to sharing it. This Accountability Report recognizes PLAN for its leadership, advocacy, and focus on contribution and citizenship.

PLAN's Board has responded to areas for improvement identified in the social audit process and has set 23 targets for 2004 that will guide PLAN's strategic planning. The most significant area for development is in the realm of funding and self-sufficiency. In addition, PLAN has set targets to increase its effectiveness in supporting families to achieve the elusive goal of peace of mind.

PLAN will undertake its next social audit in 2004.
